Priligy (dapoxetine) is a medicine used to treat premature ejaculation in men. Premature ejaculation is a condition in which a man ejaculates earlier than desired during sexual intercourse, usually within a minute of penetration.
Priligy is indicated for the treatment ejaculation in men aged 18 to 64 years, with all of the following characteristics:
Priligy is usually taken 1 to 3 hours before sexual intercourse and can be taken with or without food. The recommended dose is dapoxetine 30 mg to 60 mg, but the dose can be adjusted by the doctor depending on the patient's response.
The use of Priligy allows extending the duration of the sexual act by 30%.
Dapoxetine belongs to a class of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This medication works by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain, which is a neurotransmitter responsible for controlling ejaculation. Although the exact mechanism of Priligy in the patient’s body is unclear, the results of clinical studies point out the effectiveness of dapoxetine in the treatment of premature ejaculation by regulating serotonin levels in the brain. The duration of the sexual act, or intravaginal ejaculatory latency time as it is referred to by specialists, can be delayed by up to 30%.
According to numerous clinical studies the University of Health Sciences, Bakirkoy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training & Research Hospital, Department of Urology, dapoxetine works for premature ejaculation. In this study, 422 men with premature ejaculation were treated with dapoxetine or placebo. Men treated with dapoxetine had a significant improvement in their ability to control ejaculation and sexual satisfaction compared to the placebo group.
Take Priligy by mouth, with or without food, 1 to 3 hours before sexual intercourse. The recommended dose is 30 mg to 60 mg, but the dose can be adjusted by the doctor depending on the patient's response.
The side effects of Priligy are:
Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing bothersome or alarming adverse reactions to Priligy. You may have to discontinue dapoxetine therapy and opt for alternative methods of premature ejaculation treatment.
It is not recommended to drink alcohol while taking dapoxetine, as this may increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness. The combination of alcohol with Priligy may increase alcohol-related neurocognitive effects and also increase neurocardiogenic adverse events, such as syncope, increasing the risk of accidental injury; therefore, patients should be advised to avoid alcohol while taking dapoxetine.
Priligy should not be used alongside with the class of drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuation of treatment with an MAOI. The same goes for thioridazine therapy or within 14 days of discontinuation of treatment with thioridazine.
Do not take Priligy when undergoing therapy with L -tryptophan, triptans, tramadol, linezolid, lithium, St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) or other medicinal/herbal products with serotonergic effects.
Concomitant use of potent CYP3A4 inhibitors is contraindicated. Caution is recommended when used concomitantly with moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors and the dose should be limited to 30 mg for patients concomitantly treated with moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors. CYP3A4 inhibitors are medicines that are metabolized by the enzyme CYP3A4, some typical representatives of this drug class are other SSR inhibitors, SSNIs, antifungal drugs, drugs used to treat some bacterial infections, HIV/AIDS drugs and some other medications. The full list of dapoxetine incompatibilities will be given to you by your doctor. It is important to inform your prescriber about every medication you are currently taking, including herbal and over-the-counter drugs.
Priligy is incompatible with drugs that are degraded by CYP3A4 enzyme, for instance, ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, saquinavir, telithromycin, nefazodone, nelfinavir, atazanavir, etc.
Priligy cannot be used in the presence of bipolar disorder, severe clinical depression, history of seizures or syncope (fainting); kidney, liver or heart disease; stomach or duodenum ulcer. This list is incomplete. It is important to consult a doctor before starting any treatment for premature ejaculation to determine if dapoxetine is the right option for you.
The list of dapoxetine contraindications includes the history allergic reactions to the drug, kidney or liver disease, heart disease, epilepsy, bipolar disorder, mania, depression, stomach ulcer and some other diseases as determined by healthcare provider.
If your doctor discovers Priligy contraindications, other treatments for premature ejaculation, such as behavioral therapy, pelvic floor muscle strengthening exercises, and medications such as other SSRI antidepressants, may be effective and as an alternative to dapoxetine.
If you are prone to syncope (fainting) or seizures, your doctor will not allow you using Priligy. Men with the history of mania or severe depression are not supposed to take dapoxetine in any form.
