Harvey Smith, M.D.

Dr. Smith Dr. Smith graduated from Harvard University and obtained his medical school training at Pennsylvania State University where he received a research fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and was awarded a full scholarship for the completion of his studies. He completed his orthopaedic residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and his spine surgery fellowship training at The Rothman Institute, both in Philadelphia. He serves as Assistant Clinical Professor at the Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Smith’s clinical interests include complex surgeries of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. His research interests involve degenerative disc disease, minimally invasive surgery and image-guidance navigation systems, as well as tracking and measuring the outcomes of spine surgery.

The author of over 25 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 15 textbook chapters, Dr Smith has lectured extensively at national and international orthopaedic meetings. He serves as a reviewer for seven orthopaedic surgery journals and was editor of the Jefferson Orthopaedic Journal.

Dr. Smith was awarded the prestigious AO Spine North America Fellowship Research Award, a Cervical Spine Research Society Basic Science award and a research grant from the Cervical Spine Research Society. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, the Council for Value in Spine Surgery and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
